What is a Forensic Document Examiner? Also known as a FDE or Questioned Document Examiner or sometimes called a Handwriting Expert. This person applies scientific technique to detect fraudulent signatures or authenticate genuine signatures. He/ She will then testify as to the genuine nature of the document in question. The work involves the study of any material upon which a permanent or semi-permanent message can be recorded. Studies not only include the writing of a document, but materials by which the document was written. This includes the study of paper and ink to detect alterations or determine the time frame in which the document was created. A FDE will verify the authencity of documents by comparing and identifying signatures, uncovering alterations such as erasures, reveal indented writings and determine the sequence of writing. The FDE will then draw a conclusion about the document and if requested prepare a letter of opinion and prepare for court if needed.
